What is the "next best thing" to SAE's??

For a "little guy" who has put off making that first "couplea rolls" of 1oz silver purchase, What is the "next best thing" to the now-evaporated Silver Eagles??
Apparently the only available options are Silver Maple Leafs, Austrian Phils & Libertads. Which one of these would be better than the others & Why??

The only other choices are the Australian Kooks, Koalas, Lunars, Pandas & Britannias, all of which carry a Large premium over the other Silver Maple Leafs, Austrian Phils & Libertads choices.

Thanks, Bill.

Lunars and Philharmonics are about all I see that APMEX has left in one ounce rounds.

Silver Maples are hard to beat, purest silver coin in the world at 99.99 %.

Re: What is the "next best thing" to SAE's??

If you're looking for a "best" alternative government struck coin to ASE's and you live in the United States, the choice IMO is Maple Leafs or if you live adjacent to the Mexican boarder...Maple Leafs or Libertads. In this case a person might want to conside Libertads, but I would still go with the ML's and they probably will be a bit cheaper.

Watch what you buy as a "Libertad". Most older "Onza" coins have the word "Libertad" incused in the edge and many people call them "Libertads". They are "Onza's". "Libertads" have been struck since (I believe) 1996 and have a different obverse figure and a different reverse. Onza's frequently trade at spot or maybe $1.00 above spot. Libertads on the other hand in my experience trade at a higher premium then ASE's & Maple Leafs.

There are some pretty good recommendations made here prior to this (my) current post. Simply buy the cheapest of these selections, and save money.....

JUNK silver one-ounce rounds.

Re: What is the "next best thing" to SAE's??

10 ounce bars:
Johnson-Mathey
Englehard
Sunshine mint
NWTM
I am sure there are many others, they do stack nicely.
single ounces are.... just.. small.

Re: What is the "next best thing" to SAE's??

For a government minted coin that would be a Maple Leaf. Heck, even Americans can find Canada on a map. (usually)

The more recognizable (and therefore desirable) privately minted rounds would be
Englehard Prospectors
Sunshine Mint Eagles and Bars
NWTM Rounds and Bars (Pan America is the same as NWTM)
Older "US Strategic Stockpile" Rounds

US silver coins are presently available at a slight discount to melt value. Resale value swings above and below melt, so that is a bargain. Move quickly because I think the difference is about to go the other way. Other than that, silver is silver. I mean unless you are talking about collector value, and if you don't know anything about numismatics you should not go into it.

In the Southwest US near the border, I find the true Libertads both older and newer for about one dollar over spot, even with the recent shortage of Ag. I just picked up this weekend some brilliant 2005's which were taken right out of the original roll. They are my favorite govt issued one ounce coin, great price and great beauty.

For instance, El Paso, TX has several hole in the wall type antique stores and coin stores where sometimes I find them for even less than a dollar over spot, so if you are ever through the area just get out the yellow pages. Sometimes they have them, sometimes not. One more reliable place which usually has them is Quality Coin, Jewelry and Loan Co. I don't know if any of them do mail order.

Charlie Haddad of Quality Coin in El Paso...been doing business with him for a few years. He does mail order. Bought a bunch of these uncirculated Mexican Onzas from him @ $.06 over spot:

I'm in Az and usually get the onzas and libertads for the same as plain ol generic - .50 over spot. Same for prospectors - my dealer feels that silver is silver - unless its a SAE then it is priced way over spot!

Excellent prices. I wouldn't mind stopping by this dealer when I am traveling through AZ. Is this a public dealer, and if so, where is the location?

That is a pretty common deal in many of the Tucson shops - go to Old Peublo Coin on Speedway Ave.

I would also like to vouch for Charlie at Quality Coin. I just completed a small transaction with him, and I was very pleased. Everything was as promised and in great condition.

I just got an email from APMEX.

APMEX has been able to secure a limited amount of 2008 Silver Canadian Maple Leafs at a great price. There are on sale now through Labor Day at just $1.99 over spot in any quantity. Please buy them while supplies last. This promotion will expire midnight on Monday.

Re: What is the "next best thing" to SAE's??

The "SAE thing" hasn't even got going yet. They're still making them and a dollar panic has yet to come. I'm still loading up not yet worrying about the thing after... though I'd think about collecting some sets. My personal fave is the aussie koala. The price has almost doubled since I started (high premium) and we're only on the second year. I buy a couple rolls a year for "speculative purposes". All fwiw. Jmo. etc. :D

That is the closest thing to SAEs I second that motion also - and all of the above POSTS too.

By silver now and trade it later if you want a CERTAIN coin type.

You'll be buying LOW and trading even for silver value - plus the coin premiums later.
